Light from Many Lamps

In this book you will find the wisdom of people like Burroughs, Longfellow, Emerson and Shakespeare, to name only a few. I found this a very comforting book to read in times of difficulty. It was a gift from a friend when I was young. Now that I am old, I find it a great gift for teens and adults, and recently bought two to give to friends. My book is very well used and falls open to my favored pages. I heartily recommend this book.

This Book Belongs...

on the bedside tables of every person. When I first read it, I was feeling pretty down but found my spirits lifting with every turn of a page. Especially helpful are the chapters about Harold Russell who lost the use of his hands, but gained in strength and fortitude and Mary Pickford who writes so well about the possibilities of beginning again after failure and setback. I could go on giving example after example of the wonderful inspiration that awaits anyone who reads this book. It's the type of book you can read just a few pages from and get just what you need. You can't go wrong buying this book.

I love the stories behind the inspirational poems in this book! For example, learning the story of William Ernest Henley author of the poem "Invictus" makes the poem so much more poignant. The author includes poems addressing courage, happiness, faith, confidence, fear, self-discipline, family, peace of mind and the future. This is a keeper and a wonderful gift.

Geoffrey M. Cooper is Professor of Biology and Associate Dean of the Faculty for Natural Sciences at Boston University, USA. Dr. Cooper's research is focused on understanding the roles of oncogene proteins in the signalling pathways that regulate cell proliferation and programmed cell death. He has authored two books on cancer and published over 100 research papers in the field of cell signalling and cancer research. Robert E. Hausman is Professor in the Department of Biology at Boston University, USA. His research is focused on understanding how interactions between cells and between cells and the extracellular matrix affect differentiation and morphogenesis.

Nonstop Fun!

The second novel in Maberry's Joe Ledger series starts very soon after Patient Zero left off, with Joe visiting the gravesite of one of his oldest and dearest friends. The problem is, he's a wanted man, and the man that wants him is none other than the Vice President of the United States. He's sent his goon squad to pick up Joe, but Joe has other plans...

Taking off like lightning and never letting up, The Dragon Factory is a cross-genre, gritty, fun, roller coaster of a ride! I loved Patient Zero, and The Dragon Factory doesn't disappoint, in fact, I think I loved it more! Told in first person POV of Joe Ledger, my favorite tough, snarky ex-cop, (with frequent forays into third person with one of the book's star psychos, Cyrus Jacoby) it grabs you by the throat, and doesn't let you go until the last page! What's not to love? Joe and Echo Team have to deal with everything from psychotic Nazi clones, to an organization called the Cabal, which is out to achieve ethnic cleansing on a worldwide scale. Add to that DNA manipulated beasts, a race of slaves called the New Men, bio-terror on an epic scale, a pair of the creepiest, ickiest (yes, icky), twisted (had to throw that in there), albino (yes, albino) twins, and a boy hero that will break your heart and reaffirm your belief in the power of the human spirit.

Maberry throws all of this at you with his usual perfect pacing and style, and the depth of detail and research put into this book is, as always, impeccable. One thing that Maberry does in his novels is something that you don't see a lot of in books that are this action oriented. In the midst of all this chaos and adrenaline, in Joe Ledger he's created a character that not only kicks ass, but he has a heart and soul, and it comes across in nearly every scene that he's in. In Joe, he gives us a hero to root for, if for no other reason than he is intrinsically good. Joe is not superhuman, and he doesn't have supernatural abilities. He's an everyman with, admittedly, rather unique talents that we can all identify with in some way. In The Dragon Factory, Maberry takes topics that are complex and sometimes terrifying, and delivers them with humanity and sometimes humor. There were moments during this book (in particular one) that brought me to tears, as with Patient Zero, and Maberry shows us that humanity does not have to be sacrificed for the sake of an exciting read!

This series is absolutely not to be missed, and I recommend it to anyone that loves thrillers, horror, suspense, espionage, fantasy, and all of the above! I am breathlessly anticipating the third book in the Joe Ledger Series, The King of Plagues, due out March 29th!

I first discovered Jonathan Maberry in Patient Zero, the first in the Joe Ledger series. I grabbed that book because I love the zombie genre. I soon discovered this series would go far far beyond just zombies. I was hooked, if you want an unbiased review, stop reading now... In my opinion Dragon Factory is the best of the series. Madmen, genetics, nazis, monsters, mutants everything bad rolled up into one book! I hate to say it because book to movies are always terrible, but all I kept thinking while reading Dragon Factory was, why is this not a movie or HBO series? Take 24 and mix in X-Files.

A great continuation of the series!!!

I really enjoy living vicariously through Joe Ledger. Mayberry creates characters that are not only flawed, but somehow accessible.

The intensity was high and had me completely on the edge of my seat throughout. I kind of felt what was coming towards the end of the book and when it happened it was a soul crusher. I'm sure it was a way for the author to endear Ledger to the reader even more - I was thinking this the whole time until it happened. Well, it worked.

Couldn't put this one down and I really loved this story, even though I have an emotional hangover. Well done Mr. Mayberry!!! Thank you for Joe Ledger. I need a nap.

Music educator Griffin aims to help readers understand the science behind “practice makes perfect.”

While Griffin’s new book doesn’t go so far as to guarantee perfection for its practitioners, he does make a point to debunk the myth of natural talent, arguing instead for the unmatched importance of time spent practicing. With regard to so-called child prodigies, Griffin writes that what distinguishes them is that “they are constantly compared with children their own age, rather than with others who have accrued similar quantities of practice hours, similar opportunities, and family support.” Still, parents of would-be child prodigies can learn plenty here about how best to nurture their budding musicians. Griffin’s six well-researched, in-depth chapters are explained well for lay readers, translating studies in mathematics and neuroscience into comprehensible pop psychology with plenty of valuable “learning strategies for musical success.” Griffin also offers worthwhile information for non-musicians. Particularly interesting are his notes on selecting background music for study, considering volume, tempo, tonality and texture. “Extrovert teenage boys are,” perhaps not surprisingly, “most at risk to choose poor study music.” Ultimately, rooted as it is in research and experience, much of Griffin’s advice comes down to matters of common sense, such as the need to strike a balance between encouragement and critical instruction. Figuring out how to do this is, of course, a bit trickier, so musical educators and parents of young music students alike will be grateful for Griffin’s valuable insights and the supporting information he’s gathered.

An Important book for students, teachers and Parents!

Many parents want to help and encourage their children in their music study at home during the week between lessons. But they may not know where to start and how best to help. The author of this book, Michael Griffin, dedicated this book to his mother and his uncle "who inspired me to persist with and gain enjoyment from, the study and performance of music." So you are reading the recommendations and suggestions of someone who knows how rich an experience this is and can be for all concerned. Don't miss this opportunity!

We all must first examine the Table of Contents of any book we are considering. Here we find that:
Chapter One ─ Musical Potential is 15 pages long. As someone who has taught music for over 75 years, I can assure you that some students with lowest "potential" are the most responsive and excited about their "progress." That is my chapter one!

Chapter Two is ─ How to Practice.. This is 40 pages long. Now we know we have an important book in our hands.

The best resource for music teachers.

As a musician and music teacher, I found that I could relate to everything in the book, particularly the chapter on how to practice. The various musical examples and quotes were all relevant to the cause and made for an interesting read. A must read for musicians, teachers and enthusiasts!

The most helpful book for anyone who wants to improve at their instrument

I found this book extremely helpful in explaining the most effective ways to learn a new piece of music. Michael puts forward the premise that any motivated child or adult can improve their playing with the correct method of practice. I loved the various quotations throughout the book eg. "We are what we repeatedly do; excellence, then, is not an act but a habit" - Aristotle

This book in itself makes you feel that you can master your instrument.

At first i was upset that the book will not be in time for school. And it didn't but really thats my fault for waiting until the last minute. I emailed the company to see when and how i can get the book and they replied quick. They were very helpful. And the book came in nice and neat.

Incomplete - Lab Manual Only

We received the lab manual only. Did not include the textbook and student CD that should be associated with this ISBN. Either the title needs to be corrected, or the product pulled from the shelves. We had to return and go to a brick and mortar store because classes have already started.

Outdated, Inaccurate, and Incomplete - but still semi-useful if you are determined to take 70-640

I can't begin to count how many times I have encountered questions on the exam (practice exam at measureup.com) that contained concepts, programs, features, etc. not covered in this book!! I have a pdf version of the book as well and can do a complete text search - often I find nothing, nada, zip when researching an exam question containing a completely new topic (after I've studied all 13 chapters). If you combine this book with the measureup.com practice exam system + online research + flash cards (I use cram.com, but there are various other flash card systems online if you don't like cram) I think you'll do just fine. But this combined with 2 other facts: this exam is being phased out in favor of Server 2012 AND this book has received many non-print updates and corrections (errata). It was originally written for Server 2008 and then updated via errata for Server 2008 R2. UGH. Do yourself a favor and just move on to the exams for Server 2012!!

About the Author
Mark S. Rye, PhD, is associate professor of psychology at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH, and is a licensed clinical psychologist. His research in the field of positive psychology, which focuses on how forgiveness and gratitude relate to mental health, has been funded by the John Templeton Foundation and the Fetzer Institute.
 
Crystal Dea Moore, PhD, is professor, chair of the department of social work, and holds the endowed Quadracci Chair of Social Responsibility at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. She received her PhD in social welfare from the University at Albany, State University of New York, and is a licensed clinical social worker.
