easily, in basic papers

This very expensive book contains very little. There is no systematic treatment of the subject which would lead one pedagogically to understanding. It does not contain any techniques that one cannot find, easily, in basic papers. At some point for example in Chapter 9, it begins to resemble a poorly written survey paper. The chapters proceeding it are only slightly more substantial. The topic is hot and thus the price but you'd be wasting your money if you expect in this book anything more than a disorganized collection of topics easily found in technical papers. It is a list of references which the book cites masquerading as a text book. one of the worst books I have reviewed over the years.

With the widespread applications of in-building wireless radios, the location finding techniques in NLOS environment are getting more attention. This book provides a comprehensive review of available methods for Geolocation. The authors provide a good framework for those who want to study this field.

Eddy B�gh Brixen is an audio consultant and lecturer based in Denmark. His primary activities cover acoustics, electro acoustics and audio forensics. Eddy is a member of the AES, SMPTE, ACFEI and is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Engineering. Formerly he has been affiliated with The Danish Broadcasting Corp., The Danish Acoustical Institute, DELTA, KKDK. Now he is running his own company EBB-consult. Great for those with sophisticated home recording studios.

I think this book is a great reference book for those who have more than just a passing interest in recording as it can get into some detail that is not necessary for someone who does not have more sophisticated equipment that is not only designed for recording but will take the recording through full mixing and production. For this more detailed use it is ideal, but it has not been simplified in many cases. Just the proper uses of multifunction compressors and limiters is something that takes a good bit of study and experience, as well as aural recognition of the effects of using such effects.

If you are looking for a wide range of more sophisticated knowledge that is not equipment specific but function specific, this is a great resource.

Good reference for the professional

There are many professions that make up the field of audio. It is easy to have substantial experience in one area and know little about another. This compact volume makes a nice first reference for those unfamiliar terms that are inevitably tripped over.

After a brief introduction to audio--likely to be skimmed by most readers--Brixen moves immediately into descriptions of the human auditory system, covers simple descriptions of how power and peak are computed, then then gets into more subtle measurement. Various weighting systems are described and then more sophisticated ways of calibrating measurement to human perception. Along the way, various standards and practices are described well: controlling documents are also mentioned for those who need greater detail. There are many standards, some for cinema, some for acousticians, some for recording engineers and some for legal bodies. Brixen provides many useful tables when it becomes necessary to translate from one standard to another. Math is included where necessary. Most is algebra with only a hint of calculus. The index is not an afterthought. Many topics are covered under more than one entry.

There are a few places where the author expands his mandate, but this is hard to begrudge. There's a tidy description of matrixed surround sound, and a nice description of the AES3 specification. There are some good descriptions of reverberation, including critical distance calculations necessary for good location recording.

The last generation to deal with analog equipment is on the threshold of retirement. Those experts in recording on optical tracks are even more rare. But their recordings will be the subject of restoration and repurposing for decades to come. Knowing something about the equipment, the calibration and the technical restrictions will be critical for upcoming generations to do their best work. Brixen's book deserves a spot on the bookshelf.

Wow...SUPER advanced!

I have to admit, I like listening to music but am not a composer or producer, so I was not that surprised when this book appeared to be in a foreign language to my uneducated eyes. I really got this for my brother, who has a masters degree in Music Composition from NYU, owns a small studio, and has been composing/producing music for over fifteen years. He has produced for rock bands, soundtracks, and in recent years he's really gotten into producing electronic dance music, so I thought this might give him some ideas and new techniques. Much to my dismay, he looked at the book and was completely mystified. He didn't understand it either!

So what I'm saying is, if this book is even over HIS head, it's pretty advanced stuff. Definitely for professionals only, and even then you might want to do the "Look Inside" thing and make sure it's exactly what you're looking for before buying. Don't be like me and order it as a gift for someone who's really into music production! If they didn't specifically ask for it, it probably isn't what they want!

Much apologies for giving 4 stars to a book that I can't even understand; I figured that's sort of neutral and won't drag the ratings down. NOT for the casual music production enthusiast, but could be really great stuff for the right person/purpose. Do a little more research than I did before purchasing.

Great Story

My son loves PJ masks and this book is a new favorite. We gave it to him for his 3rd birthday and the look of joy on his face was priceless! The text is very simple and the story is short which is perfect for when he asks for 1 more story at bed time!

Well, it's about damn time!

This is the book that the Access programming community has needed for years! It uses a Problem - Solution - Discussion format instead of the usual academic "let's disect Access's capabilities, throw them at you in little bits, and let you figure out the WHY later" format. Even the table of contents is much more readable and understandable. You know the reason for reading the chapter right from the start, not at the end.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not bashing the multitudes of other Access reference type books, it's just that we finally have a book that fills a BIG gap. Once you read this book, you'll have more use for the others. This book and the others complement each other nicely.
The format of this book is not exactly new, however. Rob Krumm's programming for dummies books have used this format for years (albeit not as explicitly), which is why I enjoyed them so much and always hoped he would go beyond the beginner level Access programming books. Access Cookbook does exactly that, and in a very refreshing way.
Two things about this book were a big surprise to me. 1. Ken Getz wrote it and 2. O'Reilly published it. I couldn't think of 2 better choices! Ken Getz takes his high level expertise and writing style and transforms it into a new book that opens up his experience to a much wider audience. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! And then there's good ole O'Reilly publishing who have always had a talent for presenting a very academic subject to a less academic audience without loss of rigor.
"Cookbook" is an ok word for the title I guess, but I think "Storybook" may be more fitting, because I find that when I start a section of a chapter, I just can't put down the book until I see how the section ends. Likewise, when I start reading a Discussion section, I have to read it all before I put the book down and hit the keyboard. I even use this book for bedtime reading!

Finally! An Indispensable Guide!

O'Reilly has a series entitled "The Missing Manual" of books. This could rightfully be the "Missing Supplemental Guide" for Access, for this book opens up a lot of the lesser known tricks that are not covered in the standard text but are part of the problems database managers face all the time. Getz, et al take us beyond instruction into actual working code, and explains the idea behind it. The examples are practical - I've put a number of them to work in daily business already. And with the accompanying CD, you can see these functions in action through live database examples. The help in the book is not overly technical so only an Access Guru can follow and replicate it. It's written for people who work with Access and are comfortable with it but want to take things to the next level. The book is organized into thematic chapters so you can delve into what you want or need to know and get the full range. My copy is covered with post-it flags for different examples I want to refer to again and again. It is not often that a book can fill the void in instruction, but Getz and the Access Cookbook had done just that. User friendly, practical, and understandable make this book a permanent resident on the shelf only an arms length away.

The Access Cookbook really surprised me by how it covers topics regarding Microsoft Access that none of the other reference books talk about. I have an extensive Access reference collection, and the Access Cookbook far outshines them in practical solutions to real development problems, and also covers innovative ways to do things that you might not otherwise think of doing.
Each topic is presented in a Problem, Solution, Discussion format. There are also plenty of illustrations, and a CD that has the code for each of the topics. You can choose to enter the code for the examples yourself, or simply to download it from the CD and follow along with the lesson.
I've been developing in Access for more than a year, and the Access Cookbook has shown me things that I never dreamed could be done inside of an "application" versus a full-blown Visual Basic development environment.
The Access Cookbook is an excellent addition to any Microsoft Access developer's library. It is written for Access versions 97, 2000, and 2002.

A Dangerous Love Story

A young woman gets herself involved into the middle of a rescue attempt to free some prisoners of a terrorist group.

Said young woman finds herself falling in love with the man the United States has brought in to lead the rescue, but she thinks he is one of the bad guys.

Sparks fly, chemistry is right and love develops.

The novel contains a good story line that holds the reader's interest. There are some sexy love scenes but not graphic to be considered erotica. Probably appropriate for persons 17 years and above.

Worst writing she has ever done. The concept was good, but the verbiage and the way the strife between the main characters was presented was just plain annoying. I've read plenty of her other books and really enjoyed them, but this one - not so much.
