The first half of this volume is devoted to York; it includes many unpublished pieces including the remarkable series of slabs found in situ in the Minster cemetery. Eastern Yorkshire includes famous groups (Kirkdale, Lastingham, Middleton, Nunburnholme) and many other less wellknown pieces and fragments. The carvings as a whole reflect the fusion of cultural influences: the continuity of Anglian traditions through the periods of Viking domination is clearly demonstrated. In some cases local workshops have been identified, by styles and techniques; and even the work of individual carvers can be detected. This volume comes complete with a reprint of the Grammar of Anglo-Saxon Ornament by Rosemary Cramp, which appeared in the first volume.
