The story of Drita, a Muslim Albanian refugee

Drita My Homegirl is the story of Drita, a Muslim Albanian refugee who has immigrated to New York City from war-torn Kosovo. Drita longs to make friends in school, but faces difficulty due to her limited English. Drita My Homegirl is narrated through alternating chapters told from the perspective of two fourth graders, Drita and Maxie. As their stories unfold, their unlikely friendship grows against the backdrop of both girls feeling a bit like outsiders. Drita is trying to deal with immigrating as well as her mother's depression, and at the same time she is also struggling to fit in at school. Maxie, on the other hand, appears to be a fun-loving comedian at school, but she too is struggling outside of school as she attempts to deal with the death of her mother. As these unlikely friends come together, the themes of family, friendship, and love resonate. Drita My Homegirl is appropriate for grades 3-5 and would be an excellent title read aloud that could be used to engage students in group discussions.

Becoming homegirls

I just found another book to add to my "good books" shelf. That's what one of the girls in our PK3-8 school call this particular section in the library. This is where I keep books I think will appeal to girls third through eighth grade. The top of this low bookcase is about shoulder height, just right for browsing books about girls. This is my story, I am the librarian.

A first novel, "Drita" is the story of a ten-year old girl who comes with her mother, grandmother, and brother from war-torn Kosova (that is how it is spelled in her country) to join the father, who has worked and saved a year to bring his family over. The females are dismayed by the dirty, unkempt apartment and spend their first few hours cleaning it.

The story shifts viewpoint every other chapter. Chapter two begins with Maxie's story. Maxie is African-America with grief in her heart over the loss of her mother in an auto accident two years previously. Wise Ms. Salvato, their fourth grade teacher, gets Maxie interested in Drita and assigns Drita's journey and country to Maxie and Drita as their big project.

The two girls do become friends in a most unlikely way. What a sweet and kind friendship it becomes, which, of course, is the main plot. Reverberating around these two are family members whose lives are touched and changed in such loving ways because of this friendship.

This book is highly recommended for friendship, geography and history lessons, resolution of family problems for both girls, and the sheer joy of the story. No girl could ask for better!

One of the better ones (possibly a bit of a spoiler)

I won't re-visit the earlier review, because it gave a good overview of the plot and characters, but I must say I really enjoyed this story and I actually shed some tears at the end, which in this jaded reader, is pretty unusual. I thought the author did a very good job of portraying grief and lost love plus the feeling of disconnectedness and alienation that youth sometimes brings without going overboard with the sap and gush. And the tropes of romance were kept to a minimum. There was plenty left to the imagination and that I really appreciated.

This is spare, well-crafted storytelling and the main characters are not too precious or subject to overwhelming epiphanies, which they then soliloquize at length for the reader. The author lets the characters show their feelings or not (however some may disagree with them) and speak for themselves. There were a few odd word choices that jangled, but I think the author was trying hard not to use some of the trite and overused words and phrases common to romances these days.

Chase the Storm was a refreshing and deeply felt read. I think the sex scenes were well-balanced with the relationship and romance. The realistic reactions of the characters seemed very true to life, if not wholly satisfying to some readers. They seemed like real guys struggling with unfamiliar, overwhelming and confusing emotions. Their reactions to situations felt very authentic. Recently I read a character in a romance explain: (paraphrase) "we may be gay, but we're still guys and we don't do feelings all that well." If you read between the lines, the story comes shining through and for that, I highly recommend this book.

p.s. There is a way to figure out Chase's age--it just comes later in the book and takes a bit of calculating.

Love me a cowboy! Wonderfully written romance.

I love cowboy romance and I am happy to find myself enjoying this one. I love the beginning part of the story when Elijah hopped into his run down truck and just drove away, aimless but for once free and happy in his young 19 years old life. It was fate that he made that turning which led him to Chase's door. Thereon, it is a wonderfully written heartwarming romance between these two men, with deep feelings and conviction.

I love Elijah's emotional narration and he is such a lovable character. There were times when I wish I could be in Chase's head, especially the early parts of the story when Chase was so cold towards Elijah. That said if Chase had readily accepted Elijah, Chase would not have been that likable and their romance would not have been that convincing and honest. I love the direction of the story towards the back part when Chase forced Elijah to do the right thing. No stereotype lust/love/happily ever after within a few days/weeks/months. As a result their love was stronger and more credible and touching.

The whole story is focused on these two guys, their struggle to understand/connect, their work in the farm (which the writer gave wonderful details), their love, their struggle to find the right path in life. Important secondary characters were virtually non existence except for their horses and finally a dog, lol. But I was not bored at all. My only niggle is I would have preferred less sex (personal preference as I have a low tolerance level for sex scenes). That said, I did find the sex emotionally written and for once I did not skip! Still I would have preferred two of the sex scenes to be shorter because I want more exchanges and dialogues between these two guys.

And how old is Chase? Like one reviewer says, we can add up the years. But who cares. At the end of the day these two guys are right for each other. Elijah is Chase's salvation. Chase is truly Elijah's home, where Elijah belong. This seems to be the writer's only release and I look forward to many more emotional gay romances from her. Love it.

I purchased this book as my very first coaching book. I do addiction counseling and life coaching and was hoping to find some valuable assessment tools and resources for life coaching. The forms are very contrite and lack any substance. I don't talk or think the way the author does. I would never coach this way, nor would I ever pay anyone to coach me using these forms or ideas. Poorly written and poorly developed! Not much going for this book from an academic or professional viewpoint. I found the book helpful only in that it helped define what I will absolutely NEVER do as a coach.

A "Must Have" Resource For Personal & Executive Coaches!

I am currently attending classes to become a certified "life coach", and have been searching for a book that would provide me with additional resources that I could use during my coaching sessions with clients.

Although I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I ordered "Coach U's Essential Coaching Tools", I must say that it has exceeded my expectations! This book is literally jam packed with great assessment tools, checklists, forms & ideas - perfect for both the new & seasoned coach. Plus, it includes a CD-ROM so that all of the information can easily be downloaded onto your computer, and printed out as needed.

Overall, I would highly recommend this resource to anyone in the coaching business!

....provides a good working knowledge of the techniques used to solve problems in hydrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics. To get the most out of the book, the reader should be familiar with vector notation (div, grad and curl), matrix algebra, the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations, and Monte-Carlo simultation techniques. The 2nd edition of Franz Vesely's book includes recent developments in lattice-gas cellular models for hydrodynamics such as the Lattice Boltzmann method. This is an advance on the Frisch, Hasslacher and Pomeau model. The conclusion is that any book attempting to contemporise the field of computational physics will always be worth the expenditure; it not only reaffirms background theory, but also points the way to new ideas and fresh applications.
