Major Richards stole the show!

Major Tanis Richards. Strong. Cold. Militant. Soldier. Woman.

She kicks some serious ass.

She is also the reason why I picked up this novel to review. I am not a science fiction fan, normally. I am quite choosy with that genre and tend to navigate more towards fantasy. Mainly because science fiction writers have a much greater imagination than I could ever hope to have of my own. In fact, science fiction writers blow me away. I wish I could see into their minds and visualize along with them. I would enjoy the stories so much more, I think. Left to my own meager devices, my imagination sometimes fails to give me a picture of what all the gadgetry, ships, and biological or non-biological beings walking around in said story, look like! But I figured, since I love strong kick ass heroines, I would be satisfied reading about Tanis, even if everything going on around her maybe didn't make much sense to me... or so I hoped.

It took me a while to figure out that 'humans' are not quite fully human in this world that author Michael Cooper created. They are altered with technology. They have AI's and all sort of gadgets installed that sound quite cool, but were challenging to me in getting the visual. But I think that if I were to imagine her character, the pic included in our blog review feels pretty good. And she definitely rocked it in this book, and kicked so much butt that Chuck Norris would be jealous.

I wasn't disappointed. The action in this novel is off the charts!

I grasped enough of what was going on to follow along. Cool mission protecting a colony ship, lots of fire power, lots of cool military stuff happening, some great space suits with crazy tech that I wish existed and I owned, and a large amount of tentacles floating about.

I even walked into a wall while reading one of many awesome fight scenes. That's what you get for walking and reading in your house. I should really learn to hit the off button, and hit the on once I reach my destination... such a challenge.

I gave it a 3 star rating, which means 'I Liked It!'. To some folks 3 stars may mean 'meh'. But for me, who can honestly say came across only two science fiction novels that I can say I loved, in all my years of reading... 3 stars is a testament that this book was great, and I imagine will rock the socks off science fiction fans.

Great Book, Just Bear With The Early Science Fact Problems

Great book, but there are some inconsistencies regarding some science facts that trip up an otherwise great story. Should the author better explain some of those inconsistencies in the course of the story- then this would be a 4 or 5 star novel in my opinion. Tanis Richards is a great character, and I didn't let the fact problems get in the way of enjoying a good fiction.

Outsystem features a kick ass heroine Tanis Richards. Labelled the Butcher of Toro, Major Richards is a career counter-insurgency officer who takes the fall for a botched campaign in the Sol System. Looking for a way off-planet and out of system, she accepts a position heading up security on a interstellar colony ship only to discover that the so-called terrorist plot on the ship is part of a deeper plot to prevent the ship from ever leaving construction. Foiling terrorist attacks and battling mercenaries left and right it is up to her to discover the powerful interests behind the plot and to escape the system with her life.

Cooper’s listed influences are some big shoes to follow but I was not disappointed. Outsystem moves fast, has plenty of action and wasn’t predictable. M D Cooper stays pretty focused on the actual plot and does not become bogged down describing military maneuvers or in expansive technology descriptions as some science fiction novels have a tendency to do. Tanis is strong female lead who doesn’t spend a lot of time being wishy-washy or debating about what her next move is. She isn’t annoyingly perfect and her motivations ring fairly true. All in all, this was an impressive debut novel. I will warn you that this was pretty hard to put down so I’d suggest waiting for the kiddos to be in bed before you pick it up.

I received a copy in exchange for a review. But I’ll be buying the sequel out of my own pocket! First thing tomorrow. Or possibly tonight. Sleep is for the weak!

I have a master in public health and consider myself to be reasonably well read about global health, and came to this book thinking it would be another variation of old themes. I was surprised at the originality of Monika Krause's analysis. This book is special, probably one of the few texts that has fundamentally changed the way I think about this work--she analyzes global health nonprofits as a form of production, producing projects, and donors as competing to fund good projects in a marketplace of projects. The people being served, beneficiaries, are even analyzed as a component of the production of projects.

For those of us that were taught to pursue buzzwords like the community-centered project, data driven evaluation, and to work using the logic model, this analysis deconstructs these basic components that shape the way global health projects are structured in an academically rigorous but creative way. I loved this book.

An excellent new work that really looks into humanitarian organizations that we tend to think of as pure good, and getting into the uncomfortable realities of capitalism and rationalization. Krause points out that successful groups, no matter how radical in their origins, will over time resemble corporations in order to appeal to wealthy donors. What kind of good these organizations do, and how the 'beneficiaries' of charity work are affected is also discussed.

This is an excellent, succinct text for any course on civil society or for those interested in careers with NGOs and non-profits

Excellent read. I have earmarked almost every other page

Excellent read. I have earmarked almost every other page. I grew up with a controlling, toxic mother, moved across the globe to get away. I got the same type of guilt trips for years. I had a nervous breakdown every time I had to call home, thinking what else I need to answer for this time. Years passed and the behavior that was instilled into me growing up seeped into my everyday life including my work. I worked myself up to a lead position but my past was holding me back. People were walking all over me and I let it happen! I was terrified my bosses, answering to them like they were my parents. It was horrible and stressful. It took me years to gain control and get more assertive. Reading this book it was great to get some validation that I am on the right track for healing. Thank you. I know I will re-read this book many many times in the future.

Intense for empaths

Wow. This was one of the most difficult books I've ever had to read. Whereas, I grew up in a toxic home. This brought up a lot of emotions for me. Really good book, still if you were traumatized by your parents take a weekend to read it. I read the book mid-week and had to take off work for a day, because reflecting on my childhood. Its a very good place to start on the road to recovery. I have generational toxic mothers and this book actually gave me more compassion and understanding for my mother.

Peace of Mind

I once heard this quote: Our neuroses cause the most psychic distress when those who inculcated them die and move beyond argument and mercy. This book brought me a lot of peace of mind before and after my father died. It enabled me to share with my father how the past had caused me great pain, but I nonetheless wanted to move beyond that in a more helpful and loving way. He could not hear what I had to say, but being able to articulate it, after reading this book, gave me great peace of mind for many years afterwards. So, when he passed away, I had no regrets about not having tried to heal the relationship. I had done all I could responsibly do; I resolved I was not responsible for the riff that had lasted for two decades. I was free.

Don DeYoung is chairman of the Physical Science Department, Grace College, Winona Lake, Indiana, teaching physics, astronomy, and mathematics. He is a graduate of Michigan Tech University (B.S., M.S., physics), Iowa State University (Ph.D, physics), and Grace Seminary (M.Div.) His writings have appeared in many periodicals, and he’s written 12 books on Bible science, including object lessons for children. He and his wife, Sally, have three married daughters.

A review by Don the Baptist of the text “Thousands Not Billions” by Dr. Don De Young. I read the text in its entirety.

This is a good book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The text addresses one aspect of the gross misinterpretation of the government supported scientific community: Specifically, the age of the planet including the age of rocks found thereon.

In brief, a group of Bible-believing scientists got together, found their own non-governmental support (to insure honesty), and did some valid research – for a change – into a variety of commonly used dating methods. And as Gomer Pyle said (Yes, I’m old enough to remember Gomer. Maybe YouTube has a sample for the young people.), “Surprise, surprise, surprise…” the planet is roughly 6,000 years old.

How is this possible? Obviously, removing the US government from the equation is step one. This allows step two, honest scientific investigation. (It is difficult to be honest when your paycheck is based on producing a pre-specified result.)

On the positive side, scientific-double-speak is kept to a minimum so that the lay-reader will not be left scratching his/her head. On the other hand, for those who enjoy scientific-double-speak, page 18 directs the reader to the unedited results of the extensive investigations accomplished by the Bible-believing scientists. What could be better?

I was completely satisfied with the information presented.

One brief negative, as the font size and spacing is somewhat large (a good thing), it only takes a very few hours to read the 190 pages in their entirety (A bad thing, I could have used more.).

Best quote of the text, De Young remarks of one of the scientific communities accepted dating practices, “This is a discrepancy of 7.8 billion percent.” (page 133)

Nonetheless, the information contained in the text will accomplish very little in any dispute between old earth-earthlings and young earth-earthlings, as the matter for both camps was settled 2,000 odd years ago when man collectively nailed the Son of God to a wooden cross on a hill called Calvary. God Himself responded by raising His Son from the dead. Obviously, this happened. You admit it every time you sign your name to any dated document.

How, then, does this settle anything? As this event happened, and has been proven both historically and legally, it is settled because you believe it happened, or it is settled because you have made the wilful choice to remain in ignorance… as you return the bloody hammer with your finger prints to the tool chest.

Good challenge to the reliability of radiometric dating methods

So, let me just start off by saying the following:

1. Young-earth creationists will like this book and think that it shows the unreliability of modern dating methods.
2. Evolutionists will dismiss it immediately.
3. Open-minded people who are perhaps on the fence on the issue of the earth's age will benefit from the point of view and the challenges the RATE group's 8 years of research present.

It is clear that the reviews so far of 'Thousands not Billions' support my hypothesis.

Now, on to the book.

"For some years there has been a growing realization that carbon-14 atoms are found where they are not expected." -Pg 175
Since C-14 only has a half-life of 5,730 years, there should not be any measurable amount of it in substances over 100,000 years old. However, measurable amounts of C-14 have been found in what are assumed "ancient" materials, such as coal and diamonds. Diamonds I think are the most significant, since they are assumed to be like a billion years old, and they are also the hardest natural substance on earth, so they know there isn't any contamination in the system. So the fact that there exists carbon-14 in diamonds that are supposedly a billion years old should raise some flags to people.

"The New Mexico zircons studied by the RATE team have a radioisotope age of 1.5 billion years. If this were true, then the internal helium atoms should long ago have escaped from the zircons. Instead, however, the RATE scientists and others find high concentrations of helium still present inside the zircon crystals." -Pg 176
Zircons, unlike diamonds, are not a closed system, and helium atoms that are produced in the zircons escape over time into the surroundings. However, the helium should no longer be present if the zircons are really a billion years old or older.

Another important aspect of the RATE research is the discordance among results when multiple dating methods are used on the same rock. Several different dating methods should all give the same date for a specific rock if they really are accurate measures. However, RATE has found that very different dates are given for a rock, depending on which method is used.

Another thing that's really interesting is that RATE team had the Mt. Ngauruhoe site in New Zealand dated using several different dating techniques. The site formed only a few decades ago, but dates ranging from 0.27 million years (K-Ar) all the way up to 3,908 million years (Pb-Pb) were determined for the rock. This should also show the amazing unreliability of radiometric dating methods. If dating methods are shown to be grossly inaccurate for rocks of known age, how can we trust them for rocks of unknown age?

I also really liked the chapter on interpreting the creation account of Genesis 1:1-2:3. It is a popular view among Christians that the creation account is poetry and not narrative. RATE did some analysis of the Hebrew verb forms of both poetry and narrative all throughout the Old Testament, and the results were overwhelmingly in favor of Genesis 1 being narrative, based on the type of verb forms found in the chapter. (Poetry generally uses imperfect, while narrative uses preterit.)

Anyway, I would have liked to see a little more explanation/elaboration of research. But I do realize that this book is meant to be for the general public. RATE has produced two technical volumes from their 8 years of research that I think people who are advanced in science will benefit from more.

Note: I think it's worth noting that the RATE team contracted out the dating of the materials in their research to well-respected professional laboratories, so the idea that their data is not reliable is totally ridiculous and unfounded.

This book covers a lot of ground, it has valuable information for all types of cleaners. The first half of the book deals with ethics, uniforms, suppliers ect the second half deals with the actual cleaning techniques. Pair this book with Speed Cleaning to have a winning combo.

An oldie but a goodie

First off, if you're interested in this book, please read the description (or even just the title) before you buy it and complain about it.

This is a handbook for cleaners, not a guide for starting a business or staying on top of the latest products. It's a very good and timeless guide to the "whys" and the "hows" of cleaning for a living. It's also bursting with enthusiasm and professional pride, two qualities that cleaners and the people who hire them overlook to their own peril.

The book also has lots of advice about how cleaners should look and handle themselves on the job. Much of it is basic (helpful to the less socially adept of us), but there are quite a few pro tips. The one that first comes to mind is his warning that asking clients how the place looks after it's done is "cleaning suicide." He explains why that's true and how to handle post-cleanup conversations.

A really good guide to working as a professional cleaner, whether you're doing it temporarily to get by or know right off that it's something you want to make a career out of.

Not only did this book give information on how/what to clean but, how to set standards for yourself, how to take pride in your work, what is expected of you as an employee or as an employer. This book has a lot of great information on how to grow in the profession of cleaning including what you need to consider when starting your own cleaning business. This book is not designed for someone who just wants to clean houses - it is designed for primarily for business'. This book is an easy read and done with a touch of humour.

I liked it, but I have some issues with it.

First issues is that this book is a cliffhanger. I'm going to go ahead and buy the next one because unless I hate a book, I always buy the next one if the story continues. It's a thing. But, I'm not jazzed the author stretches this one out into two books. That point aside I did like these characters. She's clearly setting up one character to be the boy worth waiting for, but I liked both male characters right up until the last few pages. One of them does a 180 in personality. Throughout he's a wee bit selfish, but not a total jerk and the last few pages have him turn into a colossal jerk.That didn't read as true to me.

The book has some errors that make it clear it was not edited carefully. There are changes in tense that make no sense and frequent errors in subject verb agreement which lead me to suspect that it was originally in third person and then changed to first. It was distracting, but I got past it. Self published should not be self edited through. If you can't afford an editor then send the book to ten friends and have them mark changes and send it back. Between all of them you should catch all your typos, tense errors etc.

Last complaint is the emphasis on purity. None of us is pure. All have sinned, all have fallen short. It's great that you've kept your promise to God, but I'd rather read and emphasis on how that sacrifice is about focusing on your walk with God, not on just 'remaining pure'. It's wrong-headed and so damaging to the new Christians that find Jesus after they've lost their virginity. Also, why didn't she ask her new love interest about his faith before she started to date him seriously? That should be a first discussion. Why date someone who doesn't love God? There's nothing but heartache at the end of that.

All in all, I did like the book, i'm just frustrated by some of the themes and the lack of editing. Love the cover.

Great story!

This was a fantastic debut! This isn't even a genre I would typically read (I tend to stick more to YA contemporary or paranormal/fantasy) but that didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying this story. The writing is clean and descriptive and the flow of the plot is spot-on.
Can't wait for the next installment in The Worthy Series!

Overall nice story

I enjoyed the plot and characters but it almost dragged in a few spots.
I personally had an issue with a few aspects such as the constant references to drinking alcohol. If neither Jessie's or Stephen's parents world allow it in their homes (as stated by Stephen) it seemed liked it sure consumed their lives.
I had some issues with Jessie jumping into another relationship that fast after a 10 year relationship. But why was it 10 years? That question was never answered and bothered me throughout the book. Why did it take long to get to a wedding? Also bothered me is that I did not see Jessie having a daily relationship with Christ where she included him in all she did. That made it not really believable that she was in a relationship that long and remained pure. Although I was glad that was the stand she took but didn't seem realistic.
Spoiler alert: I was glad when Stephen was finally honest with her about his feelings but then what happened??! They rode together so they never talk from that point on that day? How does she respond? It skips to the next day. That did not work for me and greatly frustrated me. They are in their late twenties why did it take so long for him to tell her how he feels. These aspects seemed like inconsistencies. Just some of the things I did not like which is why I gave the book the 3 star rating.
On a personal issue I don't enjoy books as much that are written in past tense. Also for me the picture on the cover really didn't fit with plot. It looks to be a much younger girl than a grown woman with her own business.

a superb text!

This book is a strong resource for any clinician dealing with language disorders. It clearly outlines intervention, assessment, different disorders etc. It covers a lot of material, but manages not to feel dense. It also provides tons of ideas for therapy... lists of children's books categorized by what therapy goal addresses (e.g. pronouns)... sample activities etc. Paul does a nice job of summarizing the current research and its implications for the clinician. I honestly don't know how I would have survived my first preschool placement without this book. Whenever I was stumped, this is where I turned. This is the type of book that you never get around to putting back on the shelf for you are always using it. Plus, as an added bonus it reads very well, more like a story than a text.

User-friendly guide for beginning clinicians

After repeatedly checking this book out from the library, I bought my own copy. I found the organization of assessment and treatment by age group to be helpful, and the wealth of non-standardized testing methods both appropriate and easy to implement. As the author says, it is designed for the beginning clinician and provides a worthwhile resource for anyone working with children. Though it does provide theoretical discussion, it is primarily a "hands-on" book. I would recommend this book as a primary text, a supplemental text, or a resource for SLPs who are updating their knowledge and practice in child language.

This is a must read book, especially for student who have clinical practice. This book covers most of the important aspects in language intervention. Many useful examples are list, so that you can easily apply the knowledge into your real cases!
