But perhaps the most unique aspect of Deng Majok s life was his profile as a family man. He married over two hundred wives from all sections of his tribe and from the neighboring Southern tribes. With an estimated average of four children per wife, and with his widows continuing to bear children to his name after his death through the custom of levitate, Deng Majok has close to a thousand children. Even more striking is the strict code of conduct he imposed on his vast family based on idealized principles of unity, harmony, solidarity and absolute intolerance of jealousy among family members. Deng Majok was however deeply tormented by an agonizing power struggle against his father who favored as his successor a younger half-brother, Deng Makuei (also known as Deng Abot), from another wife whom he considered senior to Deng Majok s mother despite the ambiguities in the order of their marriages. The struggle ended with Deng Majok plotting with his Arab friends and the British administrators to force his father into retirement and install him as the Paramount Chief. Throughout his life, Deng Majok strove painstakingly to prove beyond any doubt that he was the most qualified for the leadership. The biography of Deng Majok is written by his scholar-diplomat-statesman son who has been highly commended for successfully maintaining a precarious balance between devotion to his father and remarkable objectivity. This is the story of a truly outstanding man, whose varied life experiences make for intriguing, painful and engaging reading. About the Author
Dr. Deng holds an LL.B (Honors) from Khartoum University and an LL.M and JS.D from Yale University and has authored and edited over thirty books in a wide variety of fields, including law, conflict resolution, human rights, anthropology, biography and fiction and folklore. His first book, Tradition and Modernization: A Challenge for Law among the Dinka of the Sudan, received the 1972 prestigious Herskovits Prize awarded by the African Studies Association.

While individual sports figures aren't indexed, some are mentioned in the limited year-by-year chronology. Lindop's coverage is meatier than Richard B. Stolley's in The American Dream: The 50s (Time-Life, 1999) and focuses less on popular culture than Stuart A. Kallen's The 1950s (Lucent, 1998). While not as generously illustrated as those two volumes, Lindop's book offers a solid, serious discussion in a relatively appealing package.

Early chapters discuss the Korean War and the political upheaval that escalated to world crisis because of the atomic bomb. These ideas segue into a section on the Red Scare, with particular attention paid to the Rosenberg trial and McCarthyism. Later chapters delve into lighter but no less compelling pop culture topics, including the pervasive influence of television, the advent of rock and roll, and the globalization of American sports. Well-selected photographs illustrate both the era's angst (families running toward bomb shelters, Little Rock desegregation) and innocence (a bubbly Mamie Eisenhower trying on 3-D glasses, crew-cut college students piling onto a motorbike).
