An important history

This edited history of Maine is a true masterpiece that explores many facets of this history of the state. The examinations of the lives of Native-Americans, the Wabnaki and others, the role of the French in Acadia and other stories are brought to life here in a series of chronological essays, that are neither obscure nor inundated with academic jargon. The later essays examine the role of Maine in the abolition of slavery, the civil war and the economy. Others discuss Maine's freedom from Massachusetts and the settling of the countryside. Separate sections detailing `further reading' are sometimes helpful, although sometimes they merely direct the reader to hard to find primary sources. The diversity of the essays and the thought that went into them is a joy. The inclusion of numerous maps is also very helpful. A very interesting book, designed initially as a reader or textbook, it is much more than that. It is a scholarly attempt to write the history of Maine and the use of essays in this case does not take away from the general subject.

At last, a modern history

Judd and his colleagues have produced the first full scholarly history of the State of Maine in almost a century. The book is really a series of integrated essays that focus on individual themes, such as pre-European history, statehood, industry and agriculture, tourism, and economics. The list of contributors is impressive. Most are faculty at Maine colleges and universities or are associated with cultural and historical institutions. The book is intended for use as a text; the breakdown of chapters along thematic lines allows a reader interested in a particular aspect of Maine history to focus on relevant topics. I recommend it for anyone who has an interest in Maine or New England history

A robust history...

"Maine: The Pine Tree State from Prehistory to the Present" is a scholarly compilation by the University of Maine, undertaken to provide what was in 1995 a modern history of the state. It is the product of many authors, some of who collaborated on specific chapters, and all of whom followed their particular academic specialty. The result is a generally very interesting portrait of Maine, from the arrival of the Paleo-Indians following the last Ice Age, up through the early 1990's. The colonial chapters and the first hundred years of statehood are covered in good detail by some fairly readable narratives. There is much here of interest: Maine's participation in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the Civil War; the cycles of its boom-and-bust resource-based economy; and its slow slide out of the mainstream of the country in the 20th Century. As the later chapters close on the present, they admittedly lose the advantage of historical perspective and are frankly not much better than stale news stories. Overall, however, this is a decent read. The 600 pages of text are supplemented by some nice maps but unfortunately few illustrations or photographs. Cautiously recommended to the reader with the time to invest in the topic and the book.

Great Resource For New Users or Long Time Users

I got this book about a month ago and it has been a great help. I was looking for a book that went into depth on setting up scenes for Architectural Renderings and this book has delivered. For me the best information was in the vegetation section, I have learned a ton of quick ways to create full landscapes around my buildings that are not only fast and easy but look great when rendered.

We design our buildings on Revit so I haven't really used any of the building generation tutorials at all but I am sure that they are just as good.

The only bad thing that I will say about this book is that it does require you to be somewhat familiar with working in 3ds Max. There were a couple things that I struggled with when trying to implement their techniques, most of the tutorial scenes are prepared for you a little too much and they don't go over some of the basics even though they may not be self explanatory.

The only other thing is that some of the techniques don't work well with Mental Ray (possibly other rendering engines like v ray as well) due to a change in how light works. One that stumped me for a long time was using 4 opposing lights to illuminate criss cross vegitation, the mr sun was much too bright and overpowered my fill lights. I was almost pulling my hair out when I found someone else with the same problem through google and as soon as I knew the cause I was able to fix it properly.

This is one of the best 3d modeling books I have ever bought. It is very in depth and has a huge amount of real world experience informing it. If you are looking at 3d visualization for your skill set this is the book for you.

it covers all areas of the syllabus in a precise and meticulous way and give you the advice on how to be well prepared and presented in the oral exam as well as for the primary exam as it hits the MCQ secrets with out too much explanations that make you get bored. Remember you should not miss any of its questions because it is the least but the adequate

There are small factual errors that I could find but should be obvious to anyone who uses standard texts. The explanations are top notch and help with the understanding of the standard texts. A must read for anyone taking the primary exams! It certainly helped me!
