In this book, Liz Koch brings together information and insight about the iliopsoas muscle that you can't find anywhere else.
As a professional bodyworker and movement educator for over 25 years, I've met many people - clients, chiropractors, physical therapists, dancers, practitioners of yoga and other somatic therapists - who recognize the importance of the psoas muscle for optimal postural alignment, back health, and over-all well-being. Very few of them, however, can explain the significant and complex relationships that the psoas has with other muscle groups, with our internal organs, and with our emotional experience. And even fewer know how to adequately release their own psoas tension, to fascilitate optimal psoas tone, or to teach others these essential skills.
Liz Koch has spent over 20 years exploring this muscle and its influence, and she generously shares her extraordinary discoveries with us in her book. There are many drawings that help to clarify the text, which not only covers the basics, like location and function of the psoas, but extends into self-care exercises and application of these ideas to everyday considerations, like what kind of shoes or chairs or sports can support psoas health. There's also an entire section addressing the role of the psoas in women's cycles, pregnancy and menopause.

Right on the mark!

This book places a plethora of information around a very specific subject right at your fingertips. I have discovered much information that I can use on my own body as I move to eliminate low back pain. As a mother I found it very informative in regards to allowing children to develop at their own pace; why not to put them in exersaucers, etc from the perspective of the psoas muscle. It is definitely something else to consider if you are experiencing low back pain, menstrual cramps, infertility, etc. Releasing the psoas will not be a cure-all for every body, but this book provides some interesting food for thought! I plan to use a lot of the information on fear and the psoas with my prenatal yoga classes as an extra tool for helping expectant parents with labor and childbirth. Admittedly an editor could address the spelling errors, etc. but the content is valuable and thought-provoking if you can simply release projecting perfectionism onto the author and appreciate her hard work, 20+ years of experience with and passion for this very important muscle!

About the Author
Adam Aspin is an independent business intelligence consultant based in the United Kingdom. He has worked with SQL Server for seventeen years. During this time, he has developed several dozen reporting and analytical systems based on the Microsoft BI product suite.

A graduate of Oxford University, Adam began his career in publishing before moving into IT. Databases soon became a passion, and his experience in this arena ranges from dBase to Oracle to Microsoft Access to MySQL, with occasional sorties into the world of DB2. He is, however, most at home in the Microsoft universe using SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, and SQL Server Integration Services.

Business Intelligence has been Adam's principal focus for the last ten years. He has applied his skills for a range of clients, including J.P. Morgan, The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Tesco, Centrica, Harrods, Vodafone, Cr�dit Agricole, Cartier, Alfred Dunhill, The RAC, Willis Insurance, Signet, and EMC Conchango.

An excellent book covering all aspects of Power BI with real-world examples

Just to let you know where I'm coming from in rating this book 5 stars, I have bought six books on Power BI, DAX and M in my attempt to master the enormous capabilities of Power BI.
No single book could possibly cover them all in detail. However this book does a excellent job of giving you a practical way of getting up and running with Power BI.
One critic of this book points out that DAX isn't covered in detail but as I mentioned that simply isn't possible if all other aspects are to be covered as well.
So although it's not a DAX reference, this book does an excellent job of showing you step by step how to actually use DAX with real-world examples.
The same critic also points out that access to SQL Server is required to follow those related examples but for my money just gaining some understanding of the Power BI/SQL Server capability was good enough for me as a starting point.
For someone starting off with Power BI or in need of a handy reference on Power BI from 'soup to nuts' this book is my #1 recommendation.
If you want to dig deeper into DAX, M or SQL Server then I suggest you also buy one of the many books that covers those topics in detail.
I hope my opinion assists someone.

Not worth the read.

Its a big, expensive book - filled with screenshots. If you're looking for something cursary to introduce you to PowerBI then its fine. But this book does not delve into any of the fundamental needs for a PowerBI book - such as DAX coding or avoiding the plethora of pitfalls and working around this evolving product. If you were to watch 4 hours of YouTube videos and spend another 4 playing with PBI desktop and server - you can easilly replicate the material.

I found Pro Power BI Desktop to be an excellent book that comprehensively covers the existing capabilities of Power BI Desktop (as at the time the book was written). Every chapter is filled with detailed explanations and examples, designed to get the reader up to speed with the contents of those chapters and therefore, Power BI Desktop, as quickly as possible. Having worked as a BI/Data Analytics Pro for 25 years and having seen and read many books on BI and Data Analytics during that time, I’d have to say that this is one of the best books in that category that I have ever read and specifically, the best book dedicated solely to Power BI Desktop that I have read thus far.

Poor Kelly...

In contrast to other reviewers, I found the book to be very useful actually.

It's one of those books that does what it says on the tin, and pretty much lists every reference to Satan in the Bible and brings a number of interesting concepts to light.

No, it's not written by a theologian, and if you want one written by a theologian, I'd recommend The Birth of Satan: Tracing the Devil's Biblical Roots by Wray and Mobley.

Some people are a bit snobbish when it comes to theological books because they make a distinction between theologians and 'laymen'. I do too. But that doesn't mean non-theologians books are non-useful. One has to remember that most of the New Testament were written by laymen.

Also, once you've read a number of theologians, you eventually realise "Oh dear...scholars love to contradict each other and disagree."

Personally, I'd recommend this book if you want to have a good overview of the topic of Satan.

I didn't read anything that was contradicted by official theologians, and have found it useful to explain things to others.

So yes, even though I went to seminary, and have studied the official theologians, and have read the writings of the Early Church, and studied Koine Greek, I still think that this book would be very useful, although when I bought it, it was much cheaper!

Deceptive title

While the scholarship here is excellent, be aware that this is really only Satan in the ancient world. If you're looking for a survey that goes until the 21st century, this isn't the book for you.

A Dubious Disciple Book Review

A strange book; I'm not entirely sure what to make of it. Kelly's premise, and he is quite serious, is that Satan is a badly misunderstood fellow. That the Satan we know today bears little or no resemblance to the Biblical Satan.

As far as I can tell, Kelly is a believer in the Bible and in Satan, and wants to set the record straight. He doesn't appreciate the legends that have sprung up about Satan since the writing of the Bible. Satan, for example, has nothing to do with the serpent in the Garden of Eden; that association began with the early church fathers. He has not yet been thrown out of heaven. He is not evil, and certainly will not be put in charge of punishing the damned in Hell.

Rather, Satan is merely an Accuser, and a useful one at that. Kelly begins with the oldest Biblical books, travels through the Septuagint translation and inter-testamental writings such as 1 Enoch and Jubilees, and wraps up the first half of his book with the Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament. In these writings, we see the picture of Satan remaining largely unchanged: Satan is a functionary of the Divine Government, charged with testing and disciplining mankind. He is suspicious of everyone, including Jesus. He is hostile to Jesus' followers, constantly trying to trip them up and then lodge complaints against them before God. He is God's Chief Tester, at worst a homicidal liar.

Then in the second half, Kelly methodically traverses the next 2,000 years and how Satan's name has been corrupted.

I agree with Kelly that the understanding of Satan/Devil/Lucifer has evolved quite radically. I'm just not sure I agree with his timing. For example, I think Satan had evolved into God's adversary in the minds of most believers before the New Testament was written, and I think the same about Satan's connection with the serpent of Eden. Moreover, different Biblical writers appear to have had different ideas. I just don't think the line is as crisp as Kelly draws. Nevertheless, it's a book to make you think, and though the writing is a bit dry, I did enjoy the discussion, so I'll give it four stars.

Things are poppin' in Grand Lake

Kernel Of Truth is the first book in the A Popcorn Shop Mystery series.

A wonderful new series that had me loving it from the first page. The book has a nice, even pace to it and the introduction of characters is done with just the right amount of information.

Rebecca Anderson has returned to her childhood home of Grand Lake after a disastrous marriage to celebrity chef Antoine. With the help of Coco Biittles, of Coco's Cocoa, she opens her dream shop, POPS, a popcorn shop. It was their intention to come up with new items for their stores, but the death of Coco in what first appeared to be a robbery gone wrong, has put this on hold.

A local handyman and a person that the residents consider as crazy, Jasper, is arrested for the murder of Coco. But, when another shop owner is hit over the head in her shop and the same method of breaking in is used, doubt as to the guilt of Jasper rises. Also, Coco's niece and heir, Jessica James, seems to be hiding something from Rebecca and won't let her look for the papers for the new business that Rebecca Coco were working on. In addition, Jessica seems to be awful anxious to sell Coco's Cocoa. Rebecca is also questioning why Mayor Thompson is seen frequently seen in the alley behind Rebecca's shop. Rebecca feels the need to do her own investigation before she becomes the prime suspect.

Wonderful story with a cast of likeable and believable characters.

Life was finally on track for Bec, she was doing what she loved. Cooking and baking in her little shop POPS, where she served unique creations, the main ingredient being popcorn. There was even a new venture on the horizon with her friend and mentor, which was sadly derailed by Coco's death.

The small town of Grand Lake doesn't lack for character or gossip, and the gossip is the model for how townsfolk thinks of Bec. Trying to prove otherwise, thanks to her nemesis Jessica's verbal attacks, it only lands her in trouble. Even more trouble follows as Bec tries to disprove Jessica's lies and discover who may have killed Coco.

I like Bec. Very much. She has a bit of a feisty edge to her along with all of the other traits most of us look for in a friend. And speaking of friends, Bec's BF is Dan. Grand Lake's sheriff and her brother-in-law. A different perspective but not an unwelcome one. I would, however, like to see her connect with a girlfriend. You know, for girl talk, shopping, ect. Potential romantic interest, Garrett, had an instant chemistry with Bec.

The mystery became fairly easy for me to solve, however I still enjoyed the steps and missteps Bec took as she followed her instincts; reputation, self-preservation, and the capture of Coco's murderer determined all of Bec's actions and reactions, which did not always end positively.

A strong start to a new series. I'm looking forward to the next book. I can't wait to see what "pops" up in Bec's corner of the world. :)

Hooked me from page one.

I received an ARC of this book from Goodreads First To Read and Penguin Random House, Berkley Prime Crime.

I loved this book from page one.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually read a cozy mystery before, but if they’re all like this book, sign me up!

Rebecca Anderson is home again. After her rebellious teen years after her parents death, she ran away to California to attend a culinary arts school. There she met the infamous Antoine, fell in love, and got married. Eleven years later she’s divorced and, with the help of her beloved mentor Coco, has started her own gourmet popcorn shop, called POPS, on main street in her small town. Things are looking up for Rebecca, until Coco is found dead in her shop, Cocoa’s Coco, next door to POPS. Rebecca and Coco had plans to start a joint business venture together.

The cast of characters in this book is great. There’s Rebecca of course, who always seems to find her way into trouble. Dan, Rebecca’s best friend since forever and the town sheriff, who also happens to be married to Rebecca’s sister Haley. There’s Jessica, Coco’s niece, who has hated Rebecca since forever. We can’t forget Allen, the skeevy mayor who has his sights set on owning Coco’s storefront property. There’s Annie, another store owner on main street and close friend of Rebecca’s. Plus Jasper and Tom, a couple of panhandlers. Garrett is new to town, he’s Dan’s college friend and a lawyer. And Sprocket, Rebecca’s dog, who is practically human in his mannerisms.

I love character driven stories, and this was absolutely a character driven story. Every character was brought to life and had flaws and quirks that made them real. I want to live in this small town! I figured out who did it early on, though there were some red herrings thrown in. Even though I knew who did it and was waiting for the big reveal, I enjoyed every second of this story.

My only complaint is that at times the writing was overly simplistic, and I feel there should have been more commas used, but once I got over that and into the story I had a really hard time putting it down. Just one more chapter would turn into three more chapters. Before I knew it, my midnight bedtime had turned into 2 am.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! Will I read the next book in the series? Most likely!

A wonderful read for amateur history buffs as well as academics

The twentieth-century history of Germany is well known by casual readers of history--but how did that very important nation come into existence? David Blackbourn's History of Germany, 1780-1918 answers that question dramatically and with eloquence. His book was written for serious students and, I'd assume, fellow academics, but Blackbourn employs a wonderful narrative sweep that will also grab the interest of non-specialists like me. It's all here--the separate Germanic kingdoms and their very different responses to decades of revolution that erupted largely from out of neighboring France between the 1780s and 1848, the formation and expansion of a modern unified nation during the time of Bismarck, events leading to World War I, the disorder that followed the war, the Hohenzollern dynasty's fall, and the founding of the ill-fated Weimar Republic. There is plenty of rich social and cultural history here, too--the rise of Berlin and Germany's other major cities, as well as the importance of the German industrialists, artists, philosophers, and composers who have left their mark on all of Western civilization. David Blackbourn brings this big story vividly to life in a book that both academics and amateur history buffs can enjoy.

A tremendously competent piece of research, which portrays and measures wave after wave of social change. For example Blackbourn shows the rise of women in public service vocations, which quickly surpassed the numbers of clergymen or members of religious orders. By the 1880s and 90s their efforts generated whole new industries in previously unvalued "welfare" work -- mother and child welfare, campaigns to eradicate tuberculosis and venereal disease, to raise awareness about nutrition or implement standards for sanitation and housing. In Germany, F�rsorge (welfare) became a catchword for a hundred newly popular initiatives to "improve" people's lives and relations.

Blackbourn captures the kinds of news that mattered more than the same old political and military contests.

History of Germany 1780-1918 is a serious textbook which is not the kind of book you cuddle in your arms as you cozy up to a fireplace on a sleepy Saturday afternoon. The book is written in a dry, arcane and academic style which will turn off many readers. Many pages are devoted to such topics as":
a. The economic development of Germany from an agricultural to a strong industrial economy
b. The emergence of Prussia as the leading German province leading to the unification of the nation in 1871 following the victory over France at the Battle of Sedan.
c. Social trends are detailed as Germany moves to a sophisticated modern state.
d. The rise of Prussian militarism is detailed as Bismarck the Iron Chancellor makes Germany a nation to be reckoned with in the world economy and arms race.
e. We see the rise of industrialism and the growth of large industries in coal, steel and iron manufacture.
f. The rise of anti-Semitism, imperialism and racism are chronicled.
g. Religion is important in this period with Catholic-Protestant hostility seen as well as religion conflicts with the government. The rise of modern biblical scholarship begins in the German universities.
h. Cities increase in population as problems with the slums and crime become major concerns.
The overwhelming defeat in World War I left German in a parlous state as starvation, inflation and hatred of the Jews is manifested. Germany became ground ripe for the sowing of hatred by Hitler and his Nazi thugs.
This book by Dr. David Blackbourn is not a fun read but it is one of the best books ever written on pre-World War I Germany.
