Strong recommendation for small business owners.

This book is a "Wake Up" call to every small business owner. John Dini has provided consulting services to hundreds of small to medium sized companies and started talking about the threat of a Baby Boomers Bust 15 years ago. Now it is a reality. This book states the facts and makes the case that business owners who expect to realize value from the companies they have built, have to make an extra effort in preparing for the sale of the company. The book's facts include the birth boom when annual births in 1957 rose to 4.3 million then dropped to 3.5 million by 1971. Five million babies reached their prime at a time of opportunity in the height of America's growth. They were a competitive group who saw the chance to achieve a standard of living substantially higher than their parents. When they could not find fulfilling jobs they started their own businesses and annual new business formation rose from 300,000 to 700,000 in 1987. They were a successful generation. Now those businesses are 25 years old and their owners are looking to retire. Dini notes that their businesses typically represent 75% of their net worth and they are counting on that value for retirement. He advises that the generation (X) that could be expected to acquire these assets is a smaller group that does not have the same motivation as their predecessors. Consequently sellers will find low demand. Only those who implement a succession plan or exit process will achieve a fair value. The author describes actions that give a company differentiation and he discusses valuation, sale to employees, sale to a third party, and sale to a strategic buyer.
The book is great value for any business owner who anticipates that the company asset is their ticket to retirement.

Wisdom is learning from someone else's experience

This is the second book I have read by John Dini and once again, I leave impressed by his ability to share a career of learning in an easy to read style. Even if you are not contemplating selling your business, his synopsis of baby boomers vs. Gen-x generations is well worth your time to read. It may very well be that the age threat felt by so many baby boomers may be offset by the need for their natural competitiveness and drive as business owners search for motivated leaders to drive their business success. If you are in that group of business owners who consider selling their business as a final step in their exit strategy / retirement plan, you cannot afford to skip Dini's book as you form you final plans. It is a brief, but informative read - delivered in classic Dini style. Straight talk, but entertaining ...

Duncan Sets the Hook

First, it's not a book about fishing. Duncan uses fishing as one kind of bait, along with wonderful humor, beautiful writing and memorable characterization, to make a much larger, much more important set of points.
Second, the plot isn't about fishing, or living in harmony with nature; it's about a young man's discovering what life really is. The Perfect Schedule - young Gus's plan for getting in the absolute maximum number of hours a day fishing - turns out to be a horrible failure. It takes a long time for Gus to realize something is wrong, including a harrowing adventure with a drowned man and some pretty serous sickness. Now it may be - ahem - that fisherpersons are more stubborn or more stupid, but Duncan has Gus discover that there are things more important than fishing, and that those things can lead to still greater things. And that all of that can make the fishing better.
Third, while Duncan and Gus poke immense amounts of fun at it, this really is a re-casting of Izaak Walton's _The Compleat Fisherman_, although Walton is nearly unreadable and Duncan writes extraordinarily well. This book is also about more or less the same thing as those "witlesses" that Ma brings to grief, although both Gus and the Witlesses would likely deny it. One of Duncan's subtle messages is there, too.
Fourth and last, like a fish taking a fly, when you read this book you will be so dazzled by the gorgeous fly of Duncan's humor, writing and characterization that you will miss the hook and line of his real message until, like Gus, the line of light has you and you feel that gentle tug in your heart.
Beautiful and subtle, hilarious and passionate, charming and amazing, this book is simply an astonishing piece of writing. It's one of my ten or so favorite books, and likely will be one of yours, too.

A Story to Be Read and Reread

I read a lot, and this is one of the best novels that I have ever read. I read it several years ago and let someone borrow my copy. They liked it so much that they kept it, so I had to order a new copy for my library. It begins like a fishing story, but it is so much more. In fact, no one has to know anything about fishing or even enjoy fishing in order to find this story fascinating. The characters are an interesting mix, and I found myself enjoying each of them. The book is funny and conveys an important messages on ecology and life, itself, without being sanctimonious.

I'm not sure I ever read a book that was as laugh out loud funny and beautifully spiritual at the same time. This book is about much more than Fly Fishing. It is about growing up, it's about discontent leading to a spiritual journey, it's about the beauty and wisdom of nature, it's about the middle way, most of all it's about love. Love for friends, family, nature, God, and that special someone. This amazing book should be read by everyone! It has so much depth and is one of the most unique books I've ever fallen in love with.

Yes... I adore the deck

Will I ever read with it? Maybe not. Do I love it? I do. So does my wife for whom it was purchased. Is it a 'practical buy'? Not by a long shot (unless it's purchased more as an art piece, or it happens to feel perfect to you). Tarot cards (for reading) should be bought, and used, because they are right for you and you alone. Maybe a $7 deck is "your" deck", which you feel, understand, and can read more intuitively, or maybe this is "your deck"!

About the Author
Sharon S. Brehm is Professor of Psychology at Indiana University in Bloomington. Born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia, she received a B.A. and a Ph.D in Psychology from Duke University, an A.M. from Harvard University, and completed a clinical psychology internship at the University of Washington Medical Center. After 15 years on the psychology faculty at the University of Kansas, she served as Dean of the Harper College of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Binghamton, Provost at Ohio University, and Chancellor of the Indiana University Bloomington campus. She was an Intra-University Professor at the University of Kansas, a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, and a visiting professor in Germany and Italy. Her books include The Application of Social Psychology to Clinical Practice, a recognized classic in the field, and Intimate Relationships, a highly regarded textbook. Her current research interests involve psychology of women and organizational behavior.

Saul Kassin is Professor of Psychology at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Born and raised in New York City, he graduated from Brooklyn College. After receiving his Ph.D. in personality and social psychology from the University of Connecticut, he spent one year at the University of Kansas and two years at Purdue University. In 1984, he was awarded a prestigious U.S. Supreme Court Judicial Fellowship, and in 1985 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Psychology and Law Program at Stanford University. Kassin is author of the textbook Psychology (fourth edition) and has coauthored or edited a number of scholarly books, including Developmental Social Psychology, The Psychology of Evidence and Trial Procedure, and The American Jury on Trial. His research interests are in social perception and influence, and their applications to police interrogations and confessions, eyewitness testimony, jury decision-making, and other aspects of law.

Steven Fein is Professor of Psychology at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts. Born and raised in Bayonne, New Jersey, he received his A.B. from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Michigan. He has been teaching at Williams College since 1991, with time spent teaching at Stanford University in 1999. His edited books include Emotion: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, Readings in Social Psychology: The Art and Science of Research, Motivated Social Perception: The Ontario Symposium, and Gender and Aggression: Interdisciplinary Approaches. He recently completed a term on the executive committee of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. His research interests concern stereotyping and prejudice, suspicion, and sociocultural and motivational influences on person perception.
