Very Well Written Christian Story of the Late Middle Ages in Germany

A very moving story. It traces the life of a woman who lives in a mountain castle outside of Ulm from a young girl to old age. The book also traces the lives and moral struggles of her husband and sons and so was very interesting for both our Middle School/High School son and daughter as well as ourselves. Set in the period before the Protestant Reformation, it provides an interesting portrait of the Emperor Maximilian 1459-1519 and the problem of Moslem corsairs. However, the story itself is fictional and illustrates a period rather than a course of historical events. We have enjoyed a number of Charlotte Yonge books and despite the lack of strong historical content consider this one of her best as an edifying story.

A childhood favorite rediscovered

I remember reading - and loving - this book as a child. We had a copy that may have belonged to my grandmother and was then passed down to my mother and then on to me. I have no idea what became of the book. On a whim, I looked it up on Amazon and got it free for my Kindle. The story is still a good one, but reading it after a 50 year gap, I found myself much more aware of the author's style and realized that I did not like it as much as I had when I was younger. It is very dated, as much by the language as by the plot, which centers on a meek and virtuous young woman who endures many challenges without ever losing her "saint-like" qualities. It is also very romantic, which was probably the appeal when I was an adolescent, in a Victorian sort of way. Despite these caveats, I was delighted to be able to read it again so I give it 4 stars for being a sweet, if somewhat sappy, read.

powerfully moving

I have loved this story since I first read it as a child. My brothers and sisters also loved it when I read it aloud to them with tears streaming down my face. Even though I no longer had a copy of the book my children were able to appreciate my memories of the story when I retold it to them. Friedel's and Ebbo's final scenes have the same kind of power to move the reader as Mathew Cuthbert's in Anne of Green Gables or Judy's in Seven Little Australians I'd recommend this book to any fan of historical romance or any lover of well written stories for older children. A must have book!

The principal actions about which his narrative revolves are the notable battles around Plevna in 1877. To enable readers more fully understand the battles and campaign, Charles Ryan and John Sandes' account is accompanied here by an overview of the battle by William V. Herbert which is supported by illustrations and battle plans. The broader conflict, fought between the Turkish Ottoman Empire and Russia, was motivated in part by aspirations for independent nationhood in the Balkan region, following centuries of Turkish domination, and by the desire of Russia to regain some of the losses she had sustained during the Crimean War some twenty years previously. For all those with an interest in the many small wars in Europe during the 19th century, that created the nation states we know today, this is an essential book in every way.

Mixed feelings about a first encounter with Ligotti

Some of these stories I liked quite a bit, others felt like a bit of a chore. Not sure if it's a common thing with Ligotti, but a lot of the stories in this collection felt like first acts of longer stories that end abruptly. You get to know the character, some kind of action is building and then it just ends, leaving you sitting there going "That was it??" It's not like I can't handle stories that don't resolve themselves. I like the open-ended stories that leave something to the reader's imagination. But several of the stories in Teatro Grottesco leave practically the entire body of the story to the reader's imagination. And it's a shame, because they're often really cool beginnings. And then they don't go anywhere.

This is my first encounter with Ligotti, and I'm willing to give him another go, but this may not have been the best place to start.
